Catskills to California: American Landscapes from the Collection
The diverse qualities of America’s natural landscapes have long proven inspirational to artists. Catskills to California features various aspects of the nation’s natural wonders – from the bucolic pastures of Connecticut to the majestic grandeur of the Grand Canyon, from scenic vistas in the Catskills to the rocky formations of the California coast – in 28 paintings and works on paper from Phoenix Art Museum’s collection. It begins with a drawing from 1848, and spans nearly 100 years, including works by 22 American artists, such as Alfred Bierstadt, John Henry Twachtman, Marsden Hartley and Henry Cheever Pratt, who is represented here by one of the earliest paintings made of the Arizona Territory.
