Japanese Cloisonné: Asian Arts Council First Wednesday Gallery Talk

Join Asian Arts Council for a discussion about the history, techniques and types of Japanese cloisonné enamel pieces from the Waynor and Laurie Rogers collection. Numerous works from this collection have been donated to Phoenix Art Museum and will be highlighted in this presentation. Waynor and Laurie Rogers are longtime collectors of Asian art,m as well as members of Asian Arts Council. Both spent several years in Asia, Waynor as a pilot in the Marine Corps and Laurie as an employee of Wang Laboratories. The gallery talk is free for Members and included with Museum general admission. There will be a no-host luncheon following the talk in Palette, the Museum café. Gallery Talk and Book Signing: Paul Pletka: Imagined Wests

Artist Paul Pletka will visit the Museum to discuss a new monograph on his work, entitled Paul Pletka: Imagined Wests and written by Amy Scott, Chief Curator and Marilyn B. and Calvin Gross Curator of Visual Arts at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. His talk will take place in front of his large painting, Nuestro Señor el Desollado (Our Lord, The One Who is Flayed) currently on view in Border Crossings: Mexico and the American Southwest. There will be a book signing following the discussion.   This is a free program, open to the general public as part of #FreeAfterThree Wednesdays. No RSVP necessary.

Logan Lecture Series: Valeska Soares

On March 24, Phoenix Art Museum will present a retrospective exhibition of Brazilian artist Valeska Soares, entitled Valeska Soares: Any Moment Now. The artist herself will be here in person several days prior to the opening as part of the Logan Lecture Series to speak to the community about her work, the exhibition, and other topics related to contemporary art in Brazil. Exploring themes of memory, time, and the sensorial, Valeska Soares reconfigures the esthetic of minimalism into interactive installations and sensory experiences.
