Whiteman Hall Artist Eric Fischl attended Phoenix College in his youth and returns to Phoenix every year to present the Fischl Vanguard Award to the College’s outstanding art students. He also brings with him a guest of international stature to deliver the Eric Fischl Lecture Series at Phoenix Art Museum. This year's guest is artist José Lerma.  About José Lerma Born in Seville, Spain, José Lerma currently works and lives in Brooklyn, NY and Chicago, IL. He is a professor of painting at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago and is represented by the Andrea Rosen Gallery in New York. Warriors of World War I and Beyond: Sikhism On-Screen

10 am – noon   See an exclusive screening of the 2017 film All Quiet on the Home Front, which tells the remarkable story of Bhagat Singh Thind, the first Sikh to serve in the US Army in World War I wearing his articles of faith, and the landmark Supreme Court case that followed in 1923.    Army Lieutenant Colonel Kamal S. Kalsi will be on site to introduce the film, providing an insider’s perspective on the challenges that persist to this day of the wearing of religious articles during armed combat.
