Yayoi Kusama's Birthday Celebration

Join us for a birthday celebration for Yayoi Kusama! The Japanese artist and writer turns 88 this year. Wearing polka-dots is encouraged!

“A polka-dot has the form of the sun, which is a symbol of the energy of the whole world and our living life, and also the form of the moon, which is calm. Round, soft, colorful, senseless and unknowing. Polka-dots become movement ... Polka dots are a way to infinity.[11]"

A permanent installation at Phoenix Art Museum, known to many as "Fireflies" is one of the artist's more whimsical works and is among the most requested artworks by Museum visitors. Inspired by a Japanese folk tale about a person in a field with 10,000 fireflies, Kusama's work brings the fairy tale to life. The piece is a dark room lined with mirrors on every surface and strands of looping LED lighting suspended from the ceiling. This deceptively small room feels as if it’s a vast, infinite galaxy of lighting and allows the viewer to enter and be surrounded, or obliterated by Kusama’s fireflies.

Birthday Celebration Activities

Get your picture taken in Kusama-style “camouflage” printed fabric backdrop along with matching fabric smock. This Kusama inspired mini installation pattern was designed by artist, Kyllan Maney. Maney has also created a fun re-interpretation of Kusama's Obliteration Room using colorful pom poms.
  • 3:30 - 7:30PM, Make It!  - Create your own composition inspired by Yayoi Kusama's You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies with LED lights, copper tape, a coin battery, paper and colored pencils.
