Circles of Support members are invited to a reception and presentation by Madeleine Grynsztejn, the Pritzker Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (MCA), for a discussion about art in the 20th and 21st century.
Grynsztejn will examine works from the Museum’s 50th anniversary exhibition We Are Here. This major three-part exhibition features multigenerational artists who have lived and worked around the world to create works in a broad range of media, including painting, sculpture, installation, sound, film, and video. We Are Here reexamines these works from the vantage point of our present moment, declaring that art and culture have the power to change the way that we see and act in the world. The exhibition overturns the traditional model of the anniversary exhibition, focusing instead on the relationship between artist and viewer celebrating that the meaning of a work may shift based on a viewer’s perspective or the passage of time.
Under her leadership, the MCA has become a new model for 21st-century contemporary art museums—an artist-activated, audience-engaged space for generating art, ideas, and conversation around the creative process. Grynsztejn has curated many major exhibitions on renowned contemporary artists including Doris Salcedo and Luc Tuymans, and Alfredo Jaar for the Chilean Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
