“Cultural Cannibalism” in Brazilian Popular Music: From the Tropicalismo movement to Mangue-beat

Though the late 1960s artistic movement Tropicalismo was short-lived, the idea of “cannibalizing” other cultures in the quest to overcome the West and generate new, distinctly Brazilian styles lived on in popular music. Join MIM’s Latin American music curator, Dr. Daniel Piper, in an exploration of global and local sounds in Brazilian music ranging from artists Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil to the latest Brazilian fusions of tradition with global rap, reggae, and electronica.
