Past/Future/Present Film Series: High-Rise
Um Lugar ao Sol • Gabriel Mascaro • 2009
Unrated • 1h 6min • Portuguese with English subtitles
What does it mean to have a penthouse in poverty-stricken Brazil? Weaving resident interviews with views from above, High-Rise (Um lugar ao sol) is a hypnotic and illuminating examination on height, status, and power. This documentary critiques Brazil’s upper classes through conversations with the inhabitants of penthouse apartments in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Recife. These residents open their homes to reveal their thoughts on social inequality, politics, and the world that surrounds them, as well as their desires, fears, insecurities, and prejudices. Through interviews as well as a poetic visual and sound narrative, High-Rise provides an evocative insight into the “verticalization” of the Brazilian cityscape.
