Students explore the diversity of modern and contemporary art while considering the context for changing messages and media.
Goals
- To explore the content, materials, and techniques of modern and contemporary art
- To investigate how modern/contemporary art redefines the idea of art
- To trace the course of modern/contemporary art, its origins and directions
Rationale
This tour explores the brave new world of modern and contemporary art – its subjects, styles and techniques. Changes in patronage, the growth of the industrial and electronic ages are developments that have propelled modern and contemporary art into existence. When artists feel free to determine the appearance and the content of art, new subjects and styles resulted. Students will see examples of art movements that emerged during the modern period, and discuss the diverse materials, processes, and themes seen in contemporary art.

- The variety of materials, techniques, and tools used in modern/contemporary art
- The non-traditional use of the elements of art, and the innovative formats such as installation art, video, etc.
- The history of modern and contemporary art as it relates to the selected works on the tour
- The emotional and intellectual responses to works of art
- Modern/contemporary visual arts vocabulary
- Comparison of modern/contemporary artistic choices with past artistic expression and future trends
