Elements of Art

Grades: K-6
Length of tour: 1 hour

Tour Description

This tour introduces basic art vocabulary and focuses on identifying the elements of art – line, shape, color and texture. Students learn how artists use these elements to communicate with the viewer.

Goals

  • To comprehend the particular characteristics of the elements of art – line, shape, color, texture, etc.
  • To recognize how the elements of art are used in a painting or sculpture to express ideas
  • To develop and use a visual art vocabulary

Rationale

As writers use words to convey ideas, artists use the elements of art. These elements are organized to tell a story, relate an idea or reveal an emotion. Line, shape, color and texture make up the visual vocabulary of the artist. Students will see how artists employ these visual elements as expressive components in art.

Topics

  • Characteristics and uses of the elements of art in creating: mood, perspective, composition, rhythm, emotion, and in directing the eye through an artwork
  • The use of the elements of art in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional art works
  • The use of the elements in different styles, time periods and cultures
  • How the elements create balance, symmetry, contrast, emphasis, and a focal point in works of art
  • How the elements of art are used in realistic, abstract and non-objective works of art
  • Additional ‘tools’ of the artist such as shape, form, space and light
