Hands On: Burial Art of the Ancient Egyptians

Grade: 6
Length of program: 1 hour

Requirements

Screen or blank white wall in a room that can be darkened

Restrictions

Maximum 30 students/presentation (consecutive classes may be scheduled)

Tour Description

Students discover the history and culture of the ancient Egyptians through tomb art. The program begins with a visual presentation/discussion followed by a hands-on activity to translate and create a personalized cartouche (nameplate or seal) using an ancient an ancient heiroglyphic alphabet.

Goals

  • To understand the purposes of the visual arts in Ancient Egypt
  • To introduce artistic conventions employed by ancient Egyptians
  • To understand proportion and the grid system through experience

Rationale

The visual arts document human experiences and values. Viewing and creating visual images deepens understanding of history and the methods and motivations of artists/cultures.
